General Info
The Cooper-Hewitt's Industrial Design Archive Collection, maintained by the Library, includes correspondence, original drawings, blueprints, research materials, and biographical information on designers listed below. Hours and access are Monday-Friday, 9:30 am to 5:30 pm. Researchers are admitted and research assistance provided by appointment only. Facilities include photographic copy stand and a photocopy machine. There are computer terminals linked to all Smithsonian Institution Branch Libraries and The Archives of American Art.

- Henry Dreyfuss, FIDSA (1904-1972): Industrial designer and pioneer in ergonomics: Designed the John Deere tractor and the original Bell 300 and Trimline telephones.
- Donald Deskey. FIDSA (1894-1989): Graphic and industrial designer of the Art Deco chool; best known for Radio Music hall interiors of 1932 and the familiar packaging of Crest, Prell, Micrin and Tide products.
- Ladislav Sutnar (1897-1976): Graphic designer who created new typography for SweetÕs Catalog Service, known as information graphics.
- Don Wallance (1909-1990): Metalworker and furniture designer, best known for brushed stainless steel cutlery known as Design I.

Partial Summary of Industrial Design Collections
- Raymond Loewy (1893-1986): (Papers. The Loewy archive includes: client files, photographs, press releases, scrapbooks, project files, brochures, publications, oral history interviews, and ephemera. These materials document Loewy's career from the 1930s through the 1970s. Among the hundreds of projects represented in the collection are the Pennsylvania Railroad's S1 locomotive, Studebaker, Hupmobile, NASA's Skylab; and the Greyhound bus. Also included are files relating to the design of the Borg Flight Scale, Arvin dinette set, Lucent dinnerware, Form 2000 Rosenthal china, and the Universal juke box. The Loewy firm was deeply involved in the redesign of many of the suburban shopping malls and supermarkets during the 1950s and 1960s. There are
records describing work done for Gimbel's, Lord & Taylor, R. H. Macy's, and the Foley Store in Houston, Texas.)
- Irv Koons (b. 1922): (Papers. During a career that spanned nearly fifty years Irv Koons earned a reputation as being one of the most influential package designers of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. His clients included Joseph E. Seagram & Sons, Clairol/Bristol-Meyers, Johnson & Johnson, Revlon, Scott Paper, Dixie Cup, and Proctor & Gamble. The Koons archive includes business correspondence, market research studies, public relations files, and materials drawn from the industrial design course that he taught at New York University. Also included is a large slide collection, original artwork, and artifacts
that document all of Koons' major design projects.)
- Thomas Lamb (1896-1984): (Papers. Thomas Lamb worked was a children's book illustrator and textile designer in the 1920s and 1930s. In the 1940s he became known as the "handle man" after he developed the wedge-lock handle that was used with crutches, cutlery, surgical instruments, luggage, sporting goods equipment, and many other consumer and industrial products. The Lamb archive includes business correspondence, drawings, photographs, molds, models,
prototypes, and advertising materials.
- Marc Harrison (1936-1998): (Papers. Marc Harrison taught industrial design at the Rhode Island School of Design for more than thirty years. He was one of the pioneers of the Universal Design movement and headed the Rhode Island School of Design's Universal Kitchen project in the early and mid-1990s. His most notable project was the Cuisinart redesign of the 1970s and 1980s. The Harrison archive includes business papers, teaching materials, drawings, artifacts, and photographs.

- International Housewares Association Records: (Records of the International Housewares Association include: Board of Directors meeting minutes, financial records, promotional materials relating to the Association's annual design award, press clippings, and video tapes promoting the annual housewares exposition.)

Special Collections Department is on the 6th floor of the E.S. Bird Library. The industrial design collections were initiated by Arthur J. Pulos, FIDSA. Generally, hours are 9:00 AM-5:00 PM Mon-Fri., Saturdays 10:00 AM-2:00 PM. Photo copies ($.25 ea) slide copies ($3.50) and photographic prints $8.00-$13.00) are available. Materials must be used in the reading room. Users should phone in advance to register, and submit requests for specific materials, which are well-indexed and well-arranged in file boxes which are brought from storage to the reading room.
IDSA has made a special arrangement with this Library to archive IDSA member autobiographies, Chapter audio or video tapes and other materials initiated by the Design History Section. When submitting such materials, please identify the names, permission to archive by the originating individual or group, general content of submissions, and equipment needed to access material electronically (if such is required). Documents should be hard copy-not e-mails or attachments. Also notify the DH Section of what you submitted, so it can be entered on the DH web-site.

The Wolfsonian is open for research by appointment weekdays except Wednesday. There are copying machines available at a nominal charge. Products by Teague, Deskey, Kem Weber and John Vassos are part of the collection as well as industrial design work from Britain and Germany.
