Though plastic IV catheters have been the US standard for almost 40 years, emerging markets like China still use the century-old steel needle sets. Not only do the steel sets require more sticks--three a day versus one every 72 hours--the rate of infection is much higher. With the Intima, insertion is visually intuitive. Its function as surrogate teacher provides the opportunity to create a safer, less expensive and more comfortable system.

"This design is so clear and direct that the proper insertion of the catheter is almost intuitive. It requires minimal training and greatly reduces injury to the patient. This is design at its best." -Noel Mayo, IDSA, Ohio State University
